SANDAKAN – Residents here are puzzled over the uncollected rubbish despite the appointment of a new contractor effective May 1 by the municipal council.
Sandakan MP Vivian Wong said she has been receiving complaints that rubbish is piling up in many locations due to delays in collection.
The places affected are Taman Indah Jaya, Sri Taman, Kim Fung, Kam Jai Yen, and the town centre, where garbage collection stations have not been cleared for days.
Sandakan has been without a rubbish collection contractor for the past year after the former failed to renew its licence with the Sandakan Municipal Council (SMC) in May last year.
It was announced on March 26 that a new contractor had been appointed and would start working on May 1.
However, to date, SMC is still using regular and garbage trucks from other districts for rubbish collection.
The Vibes contacted SMC president Wong Foo Tin, who said the contractor will start work on May 15 due to delays in the shipping of the new garbage trucks.
He said he was confident the new contractor will be ready to operate on May 15 and would be able to do a good job. –The Vibes, May 6, 2021
