BUTTERWORTH – In a blow to traders, the Bagan Ajam market was ordered to close on the first day of Hari Raya Aidilfitri after authorities yesterday detected 43 Covid-19 cases there.
Seberang Prai Mayor Datuk Rozali Mohamud said the market will be closed three days for sanitisation and is expected to reopen on Sunday.
“We received a report that there have been positive cases from the Bagan Ajam market, and we are forced to close it down immediately for three days for sanitisation. It is scheduled to be open again only on Sunday.
“I hope regular patrons will be patient as the closure is necessary for the safety of all.”
Yesterday, the Health Ministry reported 43 cases involving stall owners and their workers stemming from a 49-year-old man who tested positive on May 5.
Sg Puyu assemblyman Phee Boon Poh told The Vibes that all the hawkers will be screened for Covid-19.
One death has been confirmed to have come from this cluster, and two deaths are said to be linked.
“All of them were residing nearby and frequented the market. The volunteer firemen are stressed to the limits. They are currently doing fumigation and sanitisation at the common and affected areas,” he said. – The Vibes, May 13, 2021
