KUALA LUMPUR – Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today said he is currently being investigated by the police in six cases, including one for sodomy.
He said the other investigation papers are related to his claim of majority parliamentary support for him to be the next prime minister.
Anwar said the police had requested for the names of the MPs who purportedly back him to be prime minister. He spent two hours being questioned at Bukit Aman police headquarters today.
“It is disconcerting and mind-boggling why they (the police) are focused on the names of MPs. I told them that I have given the support letters from the respective party leaders (to the Agong).
“I also told the police that the matter is now between me and the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, and it has nothing to do with the police or the home minister,” he told reporters after leaving the police headquarters at 5pm today.
“It makes no sense for anyone else to know in detail what transpired during my audience with the Agong.”
On the investigation into alleged sodomy, Anwar said it is a political ploy to pressure him at such a critical moment in his bid to form a new government.
Although he did not elaborate, it is believed the case has to do with a recent statutory declaration (SD) by an unnamed person accusing a prominent opposition leader of committing sodomy.
It was reported that the SD contained explicit details of the man engaging in sexual intercourse with the politician four times in 2013.
The individual later lodged a police report saying he was influenced by Pertubuhan Minda dan Sosial Prihatin Malaysia president Ramesh Rao to file the SD, and that he would be appropriately compensated.
Anwar said the ongoing investigations are nothing more than malicious political harassment from those in power.
“Clearly, from my understanding, there was political instruction to the police, with the manner in which the questions were raised and the issues that were brought up.”
He also said the police were satisfied with his explanations during the questioning and had been very polite and cordial.
“I suspect they anticipate a change (of government soon).”
Meanwhile, Anwar’s counsel Ramkarpal Singh said it is perplexing how all six cases are being investigated at the same time and with haste.
“Normally, cases won’t be investigated at one go. Here, we have six investigation papers together. It just makes you wonder why it is being done hurriedly,” he said.
Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Huzir Mohamed said yesterday that Anwar would be called for questioning at 3pm today to assist in investigations over a viral list of 121 MPs supposedly backing Anwar to be prime minister.
