KUALA LUMPUR – Sahabat Alam Malaysia welcomes the Pahang regent’s call for a stop to all mining at Tasik Chini and its surrounding areas.
The group’s president, Meenakshi Raman, recommended that the entire forest reserve be gazetted and classified as a “protection forest” under the National Forestry Act 1984 to ensure the site is not exploited.
“This proposal needs to be implemented as soon as possible to protect the entire ecosystem of the area, as well as to safeguard the interests of the Orang Asli community in the Tasik Chini area and its surroundings, as they depend on the forest resources there.”
Pahang Regent Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah yesterday urged the state and federal governments to end mining at Tasik Chini, following public outrage over the exploitation of the ecological site.
The royal’s proposal includes the expansion of the existing Chini forest reserve from 4,600ha to between 6,000ha and 7,000ha to protect the area’s flora and fauna. – The Vibes, June 15, 2021
