MIRI – The Covid-19 vaccination programme has been disrupted in Trusan sub-district in northern Sarawak due to severe floods, cutting off access to several villages.
Roads leading to the Trusan Community Hall vaccination centre (PPV) were inundated.
Progressive Democratic Party secretary-general Datuk Nelson Balang Rining told The Vibes today that the continuous rain resulted in the floods.
“The weather has been bad for more than a day. I am trying to get in touch with the people in the affected villages.
“I will try to find out how many villagers could not get their vaccination as their land access to the Trusan vaccination centre has been flooded,” he said.
The Sarawak Public Communication Unit, meanwhile, said that efforts will be made to provide the vaccination at a later date for those who are hit by the floods.
“At least 200 villagers in Trusan were scheduled to receive their second dose yesterday.
“Due to the heavy rain and floods, only 50 villagers turned up.”
In the meantime, the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department said some 120 villagers in Trusan have been evacuated and given temporary shelter in SJKC Chung Hwa in the outskirts of Lawas town.
Aside from Trusan, the other badly-hit districts are Telang Usan, Marudi and Mulu while the sub-districts of Bakong and Tinjar were also flooded.
The Vibes yesterday learned from the Baram People’s Action Committee chairman Philip Jau that the flood was more than 1m high, while in some riverine locations waters rose to about 2m. – The Vibes, July 16, 2021
