NIBONG TEBAL – The Penang Fire and Rescue Department battled a massive inferno for five hours at a palm oil processing factory, before succeeding in putting out the fire early this morning.
The department’s operations assistant director, Mohd Hafiz Hafizal Timaradin, said they received an emergency call at around 12.34am and headed straight to the factory in Jalan Changkat, Sg Jawi.
“When we arrived at the scene, we found that the fire involved the storage of raw palm oil materials in a factory, with an estimated area of 0.4ha.
“Firefighters were facing difficulties due to water pressure problems, apart from limited water resources. However, the fire was brought under control at 5am,” he told The Vibes.
There were no reported casualties or injuries.
Hafiz estimated that the fire destroyed 60% of the property, adding that the cause of the firestorm and total loss incurred are still under investigation.
In total, 238 personnel were despatched to battle the blaze, with 42 firefighters from the Sg Bakap Fire and Rescue Department backed by six other fire and rescue stations, five water tenderers and three water tankers.
Supporting them were 196 volunteers from 16 volunteer fire brigade teams. – The Vibes, July 22, 2021
