MIRI – The discovery of a Delta variant-infected patient during a random screening here has caused concern among locals on how far the variant may have already spread within the district.
The district’s Disaster Management Committee said the individual was found positive at the end of last month and has since been transferred to a quarantine centre.
It announced the case after Universiti Malaysia Sarawak stated that there are currently 76 Delta variant cases in the state, including the sole case here.
Parti Sarawak Bersatu Pujut branch chairman Bruce Chai told The Vibes that more people may have been infected by the individual prior to his quarantine.
“There is a huge risk that there could be more than one Delta variant case in Miri as the infected individual was only discovered at the end of June.
“The health authorities must identify all those he had been in contact with prior to his quarantine.
“His timeline and movement must also be accurately ascertained.”
Since the incubation period for the Delta variant may be up to 21 days, the man may have spread the virus at places he had visited, Chai added.
“There must be thorough testing of all Covid-19 cases in Miri, not random sampling.”
Resident Alfred Balang also expressed alarm over the latest development.
“Is this person positive with Delta variant a local in Miri? If he is a local, which housing estate is he living in?
“The residents in the locality must be informed.”
