KUALA LUMPUR – Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said praised Umno’s push to not extend the emergency period.

Azalina, who is Umno’s Pengerang MP and a Supreme Council member, heaped praise on party president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

“I would like to congratulate Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and the party’s leadership since the beginning for upholding the command of the king, and amplifying the voice of the people so that the emergency does not continue after August 1.

“I am confident that the pressure from Umno has resulted with the federal government agreeing to the requests.”

Azalina said the government has decided to not advise the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to issue a new emergency proclamation when it expires on August 1.

“Law Minister Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan has announced that the federal government will not be advising the king to issue a new emergency proclamation upon its expiry on August 1.

“Based on Article 150(3) of the federal constitution, all emergency ordinances made during the proclamation are cancelled.”

Zahid had issued a statement citing the people’s rejection of the emergency and its ordinances last night.

He pointed to the country’s economic issues and double standards when it came to fines and compounds issued for breaking Covid-19 standard operating procedures. – The Vibes, July 26, 2021
