KUALA LUMPUR – With Perikatan Nasional leaders expected to hold an important meeting today on the coalition’s status as the government, Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has made a last-ditch appeal to his party’s MPs who have yet to withdraw support for the prime minister.

In a series of tweets, Zahid issued a reminder to the 23 lawmakers yet to toe the party line.

“To Umno MPs who are still supporting the PN government led by Bersatu president Tan Sri Mahiaddin Yasin (Muhyiddin Yassin).

“My advice is, remember your duties as the people’s representatives.”

Citing Muhyiddin’s defiance despite having clearly lost majority support in the Dewan Rakyat, Zahid said Umno MPs still loyal to the prime minister should not back a leader who fails to respect the federal constitution and monarchy in continuing to cling on to power.

“This is the time for us to show the people, as their representatives, that we are willing to traverse hardships to stand with them.

“We should not side with a failure that has seen 10,000 lives lost.”

With certain quarters highlighting that Umno, the country’s largest political party, is fractured, Zahid stressed the importance of harmony between its Supreme Council members and lawmakers.

The Bagan Datuk MP said the PN government’s failures have an impact on the masses, which comprise voters and also Umno members.

“Given that such failures have resulted in unemployment and poverty, it is time for these Umno MPs to prove that they fight for the people.

“Proving this is easy, and we can start by leaving the failed government and returning to the Umno platform.

“I pray for those concerned that they will overcome the struggle for power and position.”

PN party leaders are expected to have a meeting with Muhyiddin this evening to discuss the future of the pact and Umno’s withdrawal.
