KUALA LUMPUR – Anthony Loke (Seremban-PH) has suggested that the government delist Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) to ensure all the nation’s airports can be upgraded, seeing that Putrajaya is tied to operating agreements with the publicly listed government-linked company.
The former transport minister expressed disappointment while debating the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) today, saying the government has yet to propose plans to boost airports across the country.
“Although the aviation industry is experiencing a decline due to low demand, the sector will see an increase in demand post-pandemic.
“Surely, when this happens, the need for airports will increase, thus, we must plan for the future, given that upgrading works at airports will take time," Loke said.
He added private companies are ready with initiatives to start works on these facilities, but the government is tied to operating agreements with MAHB.
Loke said that, if MAHB is delisted from the stock exchange, Putrajaya would be able to work with other companies to develop airports.
The Seremban MP went on to slam the government over the requirement for freight forwarding companies to have at least 51% Bumiputera equity, stating the policy must be reviewed again.
He questioned why the foreign-owned International Integrated Logistics Services (IILS) does not have similar requirements.
“Where is the Keluarga Malaysia (Malaysian Family) concept here?
“I know there is an agenda to strengthen Bumiputera equity, but this is not the right way and this policy must be reviewed again,” he added.
Political stability
Meanwhile, Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad (Kuala Selangor-PH) praised the 12MP for being comprehensive, complete and holistic.
However, the former health minister also said political stability must be prioritised.
Citing a statement by the Malaysian Rating Corporation Bhd, Dzulkefly said “the recent political development has shaken foreign direct investment confidence in the country.
“It has been widely reported that quality investments bypassed Malaysia and made a beeline to regional neighbours.”
He said this political instability, which has seen three different federal governments since the last general election, would see the failure of national development projects, such as the 12MP.
