GEORGE TOWN – The approval granted by the National Physical Planning Council to Kulim International Airport (KXP) is only in principle, said Transport Minister Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong.

In a statement today, he said Kedah must meet all the stated conditions before construction can begin.

The project is subject to further consideration by the Transport, Finance and Home Ministries, as well as the Environment Department, air force and Civil Aviation Authority, among others, he said.

Wee echoed Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow’s statement that KXP can be considered only after the National Airport Strategic Plan (NASP), to commence early next year, has been concluded.

“The KXP project owner will then be requested to provide information to NASP consultants with realistic and accurate projections, especially pertaining to passenger and cargo service demand.”

The statement was issued in response to a report that Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor said the project has received approval from the council chaired by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

KXP aims to complement Penang International Airport’s passenger and cargo capacity, as the latter is operating at maximum load. – The Vibes, October 30, 2020
