TAIPEI – Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen yesterday apologised to the family of a Malaysian student murdered in the country’s south, as well as to the people of Malaysia, reported the Central News Agency.
“The president expressed her deepest apologies to the family of the student and the people of Malaysia,” presidential office spokesman Xavier Chang was quoted as saying.
Tsai, during a high-level national security meeting here, said the incident has seriously tarnished Taiwan’s image as a safe and friendly nation, and exposed problems in its society that must be thoroughly reviewed so as to ensure that such a tragedy does not recur.
Prime Minister Su Tseng-chang also extended his apologies on behalf of the government, saying he has instructed the relevant agencies to render assistance to the victim’s family.
The 24-year-old student of a university in Tainan was reported missing by the institution on Thursday morning.
CCTV footage showed her walking by herself on a railway overpass near the varsity on Wednesday night.
Police on Thursday arrested a suspect, who later confessed to strangling the student and dumping her body in the mountainous Alian district in neighbouring Kaohsiung.
The authorities have found the remains.
The suspect is being held for voluntary manslaughter and sexual assault, and the case is being handled by the Ciaotou district prosecutors’ office in Kaohsiung. – Bernama, November 1, 2020
