GEORGE TOWN – Racing against time, a 9-month old baby diagnosed with a perforated heart with two holes needs RM80,000 to undergo critical surgery to rectify the problem before she ages and it worsens.
Pre-natal checks showed that Nayra Ufaira Hairul was too small when in her mother’s womb. Doctors had to perform a Caesarean birth in March last year.
One Hope Charity and Welfare chairman Datuk Chua Sui Hau said the organisation is raising funds for the baby girl to undergo the necessary surgery after her parents approached them.
He said that a doctor in a private clinic had detected an odd beating sound in her heart when she was six months old, and referred her to a paediatrician for further examination.
Examination showed that she has a perforated heart, with an atrioventricular valve that is too wide.
“Surgery could not be performed at that time because her body was too small,” Chua said.
“Specialist doctors have decided that surgery should be performed immediately. It is a race against time.
"Now, upon reaching 9 months, her weight has increased and she is ready for the surgery. But her parents are at a crossroads as they cannot afford to raise the money for the surgery, which is estimated to be more than RM80,000,” he added.
Chua said the baby’s father Mohd Hairul Hafis Hashim, 25, and mother Najwa Fazira Mohd Fazli, 23, work as production operators, and respectively earn RM1,800 and RM1,300.
Nayra is the couple’s first child.
