KUALA LUMPUR – Datuk Seri Najib Razak has refuted allegations made by political rival Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim over statutory declarations (SD) in exchange for the dropping of the former prime minister’s court cases.
In a Facebook post today, Najib denied that he asked anyone to drop the court cases through political influence.
“What Anwar said is not true at all. If Anwar had the support of 120 MPs as claimed, why isn’t he the prime minister?
“Why did he not prove this support through votes in Parliament, including by way of thwarting the 2021 budget vote at that time?”
Yesterday, Anwar claimed that he rejected two SDs backing him as prime minister as he did not want to interfere with court affairs.
He added that after the SDs were signed by Najib and Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi respectively, the Port Dickson MP was asked to guarantee that Najib’s court cases would be dropped.
During a tell-all press conference on Monday, embattled Umno MP Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman revealed that he is a “living witness” that a number of lawmakers led by Zahid had signed an SD backing Anwar as prime minister.
The claim was later also confirmed by Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz. – The Vibes, July 1, 2022
