KOTA KINABALU – Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan’s suggestion for a new Malaysia Agreement is as good as not recognising the founding of Malaysia, said Sabah opposition leader Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.

The Warisan president said there is no need for a new agreement and for the government to send a team to London to study the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) as the document has already been incorporated into the federal constitution.

“Why do we need a new agreement? What is the meaning of the Umno deputy president’s proposal? They do not value MA63? It is as if they don’t recognise the formation of Malaysia.

“Why? Do you want Sabah to be out of Malaysia? Is that what you are saying? You don’t recognise the agreement…the agreement of which our forefathers have signed?” said Shafie in his recent online forum held here.

The Semporna MP insinuated that sending a team to London for an in-depth study of the document would also be a waste of time and resources, saying that the only thing needed is an implementation of the terms in the agreement.

Recently, the Dewan Rakyat agreed to include MA63 in the federal constitution in a constitutional amendment.

On July 2, Mohamad, fondly known as Tok Mat, suggested that the Sabah BN leadership propose the New Malaysia Agreement as a more concrete way forward toward realising the state's rights and demands enshrined under MA63. – The Vibes, July 6, 2022
