MIRI – Eight rowers were rescued after their canoe capsized off the Lutong beachfront in the South China Sea, some 20km from here.

On a fishing trip gone wrong, the group lost control of the canoe after being battered by strong waves this morning.

Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department said in a statement that an emergency call was placed at 9.40am and search and rescue teams were deployed to the site.

“Caller said there were eight in the canoe and one of them was swept away by the waves.

“We deployed our rescue teams, and the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency also sent theirs.

“At 11.46am, we received notification that the maritime units had rescued the rowers. All of them are unharmed and have been brought to the shore.”

The weather in northern Sarawak has been bad for more than a week.

In Miri and the surrounding districts, there were incidents of big trees being uprooted by strong winds and incidents of blackouts after power lines were toppled. – The Vibes, July 17, 2022
