KOTA KINABALU – The need for a new Malaysia Agreement is irrelevant to the federal government’s assurance to maintain the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), said Keningau MP Datuk Seri Jeffrey Kitingan.

The Sabah deputy chief minister, who admitted having proposed a new agreement, said his call for a new deal stemmed from the lackadaisical effort to honour and implement the terms in MA63.

“I wish to clarify here. Indeed, I proposed a new (Malaysia) deal, but it was done at a time when I saw the agreement was not being investigated and honoured.

“What use is the deal if it is not respected?”

On May 7 last year, Jeffrey had proposed a new federal constitution and Malaysia Agreement as the terms have not turned out as aspired after 58 years.

Ongkili had said there was no need for a new Malaysia Agreement as the government is now looking into realising the terms of the deal, adding that proposing a new agreement would also distort the national struggle. – The Vibes, July 27, 2022
