MIRI – The armed forces successfully foiled an attempt by smugglers to spirit away beer cartons and alcohol across the border into Brunei, early this morning.
In an early raid at 2.30am at the Kg Sibukang jetty in Limbang, located 1km away from the border, armed forces personnel seized 116 cartons of beer and alcohol of various brands estimated to be worth RM90,000.
A spokesman for the Malaysian Armed Forces, Infantry Division 1 headquarters, said the raid was carried out after its personnel who were on patrol noticed suspicious activities after spotting a van parked at the pier.
“The personnel inspected the van and found two local men and a woman together with two Bruneian men aged between 24 to 53 were in the vehicle.
“Following the discovery of alcohol in the vehicle, they were suspected of being involved in the smuggling of the goods from Malaysia to Brunei,” he said in a statement today.
According to the spokesman, the van, estimated to be worth RM30,000, was also confiscated.
“All alcoholic beverages were confiscated and the arrested individuals were then taken to the Limbang district police headquarters for further action,” he said.
According to him, the armed forces remain committed to ensuring the country’s sovereignty continues to be preserved.
“It is important to prevent the entry of illegal immigrants to curtail any form of cross-border crime, which also risks contributing to the spread of Covid-19,” he added. – The Vibes, August 10, 2022
