MELAKA – Efforts are continuously being carried out by the Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB) to preserve heritage buildings in the state, especially in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) World Heritage Site.

MBMB Mayor Datuk Zainal Abu said this demonstrated the local authority’s commitment to protect the site.

He said conservation works on the buildings were done according to the set procedure so as not to affect the heritage site.

“The conservation efforts of the heritage buildings or monuments are very important to maintain Melaka’s status as a Unesco World Heritage City, awarded 14 years ago.

“The efforts are in line with the MBMB Local Plan 2035 which involves quality infrastructure management and facilities,” he told reporters after the Melaka Heritage Parade in conjunction with the 14th anniversary of Melaka’s inscription as a Unesco World Heritage Site in Banda Hilir, here, last night.

The event was officiated by Melaka’s Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Mohd Ali Rustam. Also present was state secretary Datuk Zaidi Johari.

Elaborating, Zainal said one of the conservation efforts being carried out was the repainting of the clock tower building at Dataran Stadthuys involving an allocation of about RM100,000.

He said the repainting of the over 100-year-old iconic red clock tower was expected to take two to three months to complete as it involved several technical requirements that need to be followed.

“We are also carrying out conservation works on the Melaka Museum Corporation buildings, most of which are hundreds of years old,” he said. – Bernama, August 15, 2022
