Cops arrest five, including three teens, for allegedly abducting infant

BUKIT MERTAJAM – Police rescued a 9-month old infant hours after the girl was reported missing, following a tip that five individuals were allegedly involved in the abduction from a housing estate in Bukit Tengah.

Acting on the report, police immediately swept into two locations before recovering the infant safely at a couple’s house in Kulim, Kedah around the wee hours of Wednesday morning.

Bukit Mertajam district police chief Tan Cheng Shan told a press conference here that police began to investigate the case after the mother of the victim lodged a police report that the infant went missing under the watch of a 65-year-old babysitter here.

“A police team detained three suspects, aged 14 to 18, during a raid at a hut in Machang Bubok at about 11.50pm on Tuesday.

“Upon interrogation, the suspects revealed that a couple had taken the child,” he said.

A police team, Tan said, then located the house around midnight before storming in and rescuing the infant, subsequently arresting the couple, a 43-year-old woman and her husband, 30.

The girl was allegedly kidnapped by the babysitter’s 14-year-old grandchild.

The victim’s mother found out about her missing child when she went over to the babysitter’s apartment in Bukit Mertajam to pick her daughter up.

The suspects have been remanded for four days until Saturday to help with investigations under Section 363 of the Penal Code for kidnapping. – The Vibes, August 25, 2022
