GEORGE TOWN – Police here say they have noticed an uptick in vice activities following the economy’s reopening amid a reduction in Covid-19 cases.
After receiving a barrage of complaints about prostitution activities, the criminal investigation department’s D7 division launched “Ops Noda” to nab sex workers and pimps in the city.
Acting George Town district police head V. Saravanan told a press conference the operation was launched last week on August 30, and 13 premises were raided over the past week for alleged prostitution.
Since the operation began, police have arrested 53 suspects, comprising five local men, five local women, six foreign men and 37 foreign women.
They are all suspected of being involved in vice activities which include allowing some of the sex workers to offer services at customers’ homes.
It is learnt that social media is one of the methods used to arrange a booking for a prostitute.
Saravanan also said that, yesterday, the D7 team raided a shop house in Jalan Sg Dua, near the Vanda Business Park in Gelugor.
They nabbed 11 suspected call girls and 1 male foreigner, whom police believe is a pimp. The suspects are aged between 24 and 52, and are remanded for three days at the Bayan Baru centralised lock up station.
All investigations are being conducted under the Penal Code and Immigration laws. – The Vibes, September 8, 2022
