MIRI – Mandatory masking may be reimposed in all eateries in most of Kuching as Covid-19 infections are still prevalent, Kuching City South Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said.
The city council is mulling this even though the federal Health Ministry has made masking optional.
“Our council will meet tomorrow to decide on the matter.
“Using face masks may be made mandatory in eateries under the Kuching City South jurisdiction again as we are worried not just about Covid-19 cases but also the flu,” he told reporters in Kuching today.
Kuching, along with Miri, Sibu and Bintulu are still recording a high number of new Covid-19 infections every week.
On September 8, Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian said the state cannot relax too many Covid-19 preventive measures as the cases of new infections and deaths remain on the high side.
He said this state will still need some tight SOPs to be in place even though at the national level, most of the SOPs have been eased.
According to the Health Ministry’s CovidNow website, Sarawak has 96 new infections on a seven-day rolling average, and a positivity rate of 5.3%, compared to the national positivity rate of 6.8%.
The state also marked a 9% increase in Covid-19 cases in the past seven days, according to the website’s data, which was updated last night.
