MIRI – A 15-year-old girl has gone missing along the Miri beachfront, with her personal belongings mysteriously placed in an orderly manner on the beach.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department in Miri, headed by its chief Bonny Martin Saging,  launched a search-and-rescue (SAR) operation for the girl, whose father had lodged an official report at 7.25am today.

He said his daughter had left their house yesterday at about 3pm and had not returned home since, according to a statement by the department.

“He said that this morning a stranger answered his daughter’s handphone when he called it,” the statement said.

“The person said he was a member of the public and had found the handphone placed on Coco Cabana Beach.”

The father then went to the beach, which is about 1km from Miri city centre, and found his daughter’s personal belongings – namely her handbag and handphone, placed neatly on the beach – but the girl was nowhere in sight.

SAR teams are now combing the 2-km long beachfront as well as the coastline, which faces the South China Sea.

Police are also involved, and boats have been deployed to search the waters off the coastline.
