KUALA LUMPUR – PKR Batu division vice-chief Rozan Azen Mat Rasip was released from police custody at noon today after a night in the Jinjang lock-up. He was arrested yesterday while addressing voters on voting discrepancies.
Rozan said he was released today after being bailed out by former Batu Parliament member Chua Tian Chang, also known as Tian Chua.
Rozan said he had been merely speaking to people about their voting rights and had done nothing wrong.
“I was raising awareness about the need to check voting details on the Election Commission (EC) website and to lodge a police report and complain to the EC if voters find that their voting area has been changed without their consent,” he said in a statement today.
He added that he expects to be charged in court soon, but noted that police did not explain why he was being investigated under the Penal Code.
Rozan forwarded complaints from Batu voters to the electoral reform coalition Bersih, with some of them finding their voting constituencies changed from what was registered for the previous general election.
According to a statement by Sentul district police chief Beh Eng Lai, Rozan had obstructed traffic by standing on the road while giving a speech using a loudhailer and holding a political party flag.
Beh said Rozan had also refused to obey instructions from police officers to stop his activity and had instead provoked them by questioning their authority.
To this, Rozan said Beh had made unfounded allegations against him – which he would answer in a detailed statement later after discussions with his lawyer.
Rozan also said he had been roughly handled by the police which caused him to fall and was handcuffed in such a manner that caused cuts on his wrists.
He said his supposed offence was not explained to him at the point of his arrest, and he had to ask police repeatedly why he was being arrested. – The Vibes, October 15, 2022
