LANGKAWI – A total of 37 flood victims from 10 families from Kg Atas in Mukim Padang Mat Sirat here were placed in a temporary evacuation centre at Dewan Syifa tonight following heavy rain since 4am.
Langkawi Civil Defence Force officer Ahmad Shahfikri Darus said the centre was opened at about 8pm.
“The villagers’ houses began to be inundated around 6pm. Several other areas in this district, such as Ayer Hangat and Kuah, were also hit by floods but, so far, no centre has been opened in these areas as the water levels there have receded,” he said in a statement tonight.
Shahfikri said they would continue to monitor the water levels of the main rivers from time to time as well as the flood-prone areas.
A check tonight found Sg Melaka overflowing its banks around Kg Atas and the Padang Mat Sirat market in the Padang Mat Sirat subdistrict.
Meanwhile, eight houses in Kg Sg Bongkok, Mukim Gurun in the Kuala Muda district were also hit by floods at about 5pm today following more than three hours of a downpour, but no centre was opened as the water later receded. – Bernama, October 16, 2022
