MELAKA – Melaka Srikandi Bersatu chief Azalina Abdul Rahman has resigned from the party with immediate effect, citing dissatisfaction with the leadership’s treatment of women leaders.

Azalina also quit as the Melaka Wanita Perikatan Nasional (PN) head and as a PN national committee member.

Also following in Azalina’s footsteps are Melaka Srikandi Bersatu information head Rohani Ahmad and 320 Srikandi movers in several divisions.

“This decision was taken after I felt that Bersatu is not treating women fairly in the 15th general election, as the number of women candidates is less than 9% of the total number of seats in the peninsula.

“Many female candidates were placed in areas where they cannot win. Efforts to strengthen the role of women in politics turned out to be mere rhetoric. This has affected my trust in the party’s leadership,” she said today.

Jasin Bersatu deputy chief Mustaffar Ahmad and several other leaders in the division also announced their resignations from the party.

“Bersatu’s desire to raise the voice of young people to a higher level is seen as mere rhetoric. Therefore, we unanimously decided to resign en masse immediately,” he said.

Meanwhile, Melaka Bersatu chief Dr Mohd Yadzil Yaakub said the party was aware of the resignations of several members in the state.

“Leaders come and go. The party is open to anyone who wants to join in the cause of Bersatu and PN,” he said in a statement.

He said the party would not prevent anyone from leaving if they no longer subscribed to its struggle. – Bernama, November 5, 2022
