KUALA LUMPUR – Covid-19 cases have been on the rise since mid-October, from over 1,500 daily to 4,621 as of yesterday, the Health Ministry’s KKMNOW website shows.
Updated before midnight last night, all but two of the total infections recorded yesterday were local cases.
The vast majority of them at 95.4% were under home quarantine, indicating less severity of infection.
Only 4.4% of the new infections were hospitalised, with just 20 patients in the intensive care unit and 50 on ventilators.
Caretaker health minister Khairy Jamaluddin warned on October 31 of a surge in cases due to the Omicron XXB sub-variant and a low second booster uptake.
He said for this reason, the ministry still highly recommends masking indoors in crowded spaces, even if it is no longer mandatory.
On Covid-19 standard operating procedures for the coming general election, Khairy said candidates who test positive must isolate themselves and use social media and online methods to campaign during the period.
Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah was also reported saying that Covid-19 positive voters can still vote, either in a separate room and using a special lane, or by wearing protective equipment.
