MIRI – Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian has taken state opposition parties to task for raising a hue and cry over the ruling Gabungan Parti Sarawak’s (GPS) working relationship with Umno, as well as the former’s choice for prime minister.
The SUPP president, who arrived in Miri today, claimed that leaders of the state’s opposition parties are misleading the people on the issues.
“In Kuching and other places the opposition are harping on this. They are saying GPS votes are Umno votes.”
He said they are unduly linking GPS to Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi becoming the next prime minister.
He said people must be careful about the opposition’s “misleading tactics” such as talks of offering a deputy prime ministerial seat to Sarawak.
Speaking at a briefing at SUPP’s office here, he called on local voters to help new candidate Jeffery Phang win the Miri seat in the 15th general election come November 19.
He said Phang has a good vision for Miri, including the building of a cancer treatment ward in the hospital here.
State DAP chairman Chong Chien Jen had earlier challenged GPS chairman Tan Sri Abang Johari Abang Openg, who is Sarawak premier, to make a public declaration on who the coalition wants as the next prime minister.
He said that GPS leaders have supported Umno and Barisan Nasional over the past few years.
“For us in Sarawak Pakatan Harapan, our choice for the next prime minister is Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim,” he said at a rally. “We dare to tell the public our choice.”
Sarawak PKR deputy chairman Abun Sui had also recently told The Vibes that the people of Sarawak want to know if GPS is backing Zahid as the next prime minister.
On October 21, opposition Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) had alleged that GPS is going to enter into a pact with Umno and PAS to form the next federal government.
PBK president Voon Lee Shan had said his party feels that the three groups will be going to “sleep with each other” in Putrajaya very soon.
He reminded how certain PAS leaders had mocked the native people of Sarawak in racial tones many times before.
PBK has entered into a political pact with other local opposition parties namely Parti Sarawak Bersatu, Aspirasi, Sedar and Parti Bangsa Dayak Sarawak. – The Vibes, November 8, 2022
