KUALA LUMPUR – Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi will eventually become the prime minister.

Mahathir, who is also Gerakan Tanah Air chairman, said this would happen even though Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob is being touted to retain his position as Barisan Nasional’s (BN) leading figure should the coalition win the 15th general election (GE15).

“Poor Ismail Sabri. Promised to continue as prime minister if BN wins. And he dissolved Parliament. Now his cronies are not being selected as candidates.

“He has become weak. Many who believe Zahid’s promise that Ismail Sabri will become prime minister will only remember it as a promise. The one who will eventually become the prime minister is Zahid,” Mahathir said in a Facebook post today.

Recently, Zahid has reiterated his stance that Ismail Sabri will be appointed prime minister if BN wins GE15.

Even though he is Umno president and BN chairman, Zahid is not the prime minister and holds no position in the government.

Ismail Sabri was previously reported as saying that he still remains BN’s “poster boy” for GE15.

The caretaker prime minister said the decision has not changed and remains as decided by Umno’s Supreme Council with the support of 156 divisions during the party’s most recent general assembly. – The Vibes, November 9, 2022
