KOTA KINABALU – Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal sees no point for election candidates or lawmakers to declare their assets if the authorities do not investigate dubious declarations.

The Warisan president said some politicians may even under-declare their wealth.

“You can declare your assets. I don’t mind declaring. I have been declaring my assets when I was in the cabinet.

“I still declare my assets as an MP. But what happens then?” he said at a ceramah in Kepayan last night

“Too many of them declare assets all of a sudden, in a short period of time, but are there any actions taken?

“What is the point of declaring if no action is taken? If there is a sudden change in wealth, there must be enforcement action taken,” he added.

Shafie, who is defending his Semporna seat in the 15th general election, was responding to PKR’s move to have its GE15 candidates declare their assets.

PKR is the only party mandating this for the election. Other coalitions have said while it is not an issue, it is only required if lawmakers are being appointed to the cabinet. – The Vibes, November 12, 2022
