KUALA LUMPUR – The Dewan Rakyat saw a brief moment of alarm today when Fathul Huzir Ayob (Gerik-PN) appeared to asphyxiate halfway through his debate on the royal address.
Fathul began loosening his necktie while exhibiting shortness of breath and a pale complexion as he was speaking on several issues, including rising cost of living and the nation’s healthcare condition.
While it was first assumed that Fathul’s stunted speech was a show of emotion, lawmakers from across the divide, namely Sim Tze Tzin (Bayan Baru-PH) and Khoo Poay Tiong (Kota Melaka-PH) raised the alarm when Fathul started to sway on his feet.
Calling for a doctor to assist Fathul, the MPs were heard repeatedly asking if Fathul was okay as his speech became more garbled by the second.
After being questioned by Deputy Speaker Datuk Ramli Mohd Nor (Cameron Highlands-BN) on whether he will be able to continue his speech, Fathul attempted to soldier through the remaining minute of his allocated time but was unable to do so successfully.
Prior to the abrupt end to his speech, Fathul managed to joke and say that he was perhaps “overcome by emotion” while taking a break for a sip of water.
In response to Fathul’s ostensible poor health, Ramli then allowed him to be escorted out by a sergeant-at-arms (bentara), saying: “If you are not feeling well, you can go to the clinic. The sergeant-at-arms will help you.”
Fathul was then spotted exiting the lower House accompanied by several officials, before the next MP was called to deliver their speech. – The Vibes, February 20, 2023
