[UPDATED] Defeated Shahrizat now part of Umno Supreme Council

KUALA LUMPUR – Tan Sri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, who failed in her bid to return as Umno Wanita chief during its recent internal election, has been appointed as a member of the party’s Supreme Council today. 

The matter was revealed by Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who announced the full list of the party’s new leadership lineup during a press conference here. 

Zahid also announced that Shahrizat has been given the mandate to lead Umno’s Women and Family Affairs Council as its chairman.

During the recent Umno polls, Shahrizat lost the race for Wanita chief for the 2023-2026 term to incumbent Datuk Seri Noraini Ahmad. She only managed to garner 77 votes of 189, with Noraini securing 112.

Her defeat meant she failed to reclaim the post that she once held for nine years – from 2009 to 2018.

The former cabinet member had withdrawn from politics before making a surprise announcement of her return ahead of the party elections.

In his press conference following the first meeting of the new Umno Supreme Council, Zahid also announced former Umno Youth chief Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki as the party’s new secretary-general, replacing Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan.

Law and Institutional Reform Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, who lost her bid to be an Umno vice-president, was appointed as information chief.

Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, meanwhile, has been retained as the party’s treasurer-general.

Zahid also announced that Johor Umno deputy chief Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed, Wangsa Maju division chief Datuk Seri Mohamed Shafei Abdullah and former communications minister Datuk Seri Jailani Johari are among several appointed Supreme Council members.
