KUALA LUMPUR – DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke said the unity government will leave Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s application for a pardon to the wisdom of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
Loke, who is also transport minister, said the request from Umno for the king to consider a royal pardon for Najib, a former prime minister, was not a stand taken by the unity government.
“This was the stand taken by Umno. Anyone who has been convicted can request for a royal pardon... that is the normal, fair process,” he told a press conference here, today.
He also said the cabinet will not and cannot discuss the former premier’s pardon application.
On Friday, the Umno supreme council had unanimously decided to apply for a royal pardon for Najib.
On another matter, Loke said a letter sent by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said was also never discussed in cabinet.
“The matter was never discussed in our cabinet meeting and I am not sure if it will be raised in the next meeting this Wednesday,” he said.
It was earlier reported that Azalina had sent a letter to lawyer Tan Sri Shafee Abdullah, confirming that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) concluded that justice Datuk Mohd Nazlan Ghazali had breached the judicial code of ethics.
In the letter, Azalina confirmed that on February 21, MACC presented its report on Nazlan to Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat pertaining to breaches under the Judicial Code of Ethics 2009.
It is understood that Azalina’s letter, dated March 20, was a reply to Shafee’s three questions on MACC’s investigation into Nazlan.
First, Shafee questioned if the MACC report recommended taking action against Nazlan over his conduct during the SRC International trial against Najib.
Second, Azalina was asked whether the report acknowledged the allegations against Nazlan over violation of ethical codes in relation to the SRC International Sdn Bhd trial.
Lastly, he asked whether MACC concluded that Nazlan had a conflict of interest while presiding over the case.
Azalina answered affirmatively to all questions. – The Vibes, April 10, 2023
