KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said today that Meta had been informed and flagged about the exchange of harmful content on its platform.
“However, Meta’s failure to eliminate such content promptly and effectively without proper control measures can lead to a violation of Malaysian laws.
“This is especially so after there has been a failure to promptly remove such content despite being informed it was in violation of Malaysian laws,” MCMC said in a statement.
Yesterday, MCMC said it has no option but to take definitive steps or legal action against Meta, Facebook’s parent company, following poor cooperation from Meta to remove undesirable content from its platform.
MCMC takes the matter of allowing escalating abuse of network facilities, network services, or application services very seriously, and such conduct can be an offence under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (CMA 1998), read today’s statement.
As outlined under Section 244 of the CMA 1998, not only the organisation but also the director, chief officer, or person really controlling the company may be charged with wilfully providing means and aiding criminal activity if prompt action is not taken after being informed of any crimes being committed.
“It is our duty to ensure that the internet platform is not abused for criminal activities. As such, we will inform all stakeholders of any actions taken in this regard,” added MCMC. – The Vibes, June 24, 2023
