MIRI – Victims of student bullying in or out of schools can seek immediate help by calling the 15999 Talian NUR hotline operated by the federal Women, Family and Community Development Ministry.
Its minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the hotline is a quick way of seeking help without even having to lodge a police report.
“Victims of school bullying incidents or other such cases involving students can be reported direct to our hotline Talian NUR 15999.
“Victims or their families can call that hotline and need not even have to go to police first.
“They can seek immediate help from the ministry hotline,” she said today when attending an Aidiladha event in Lundu town in southern Sarawak.
The Santubong MP was commenting on the recent spate of students being bullied and assaulted by their schoolmates in Sarawak.
On June 28, police in Sri Aman district in southern Sarawak detained eight secondary schoolboys following bullying and sexual assault allegations by a fellow male schoolmate.
Sri Aman acting district police chief Zuriawati Zainal had said the eight were nabbed after they were identified, including from video evidence.
A police report was lodged on June 25 by the alleged victim. The eight other students are his schoolmates.
They were taken to the police station for questioning.
The victim claimed to have been physically abused by the aggressors, who also allegedly touched his private parts during the bullying.
Earlier last month, a Form One student in Kota Samarahan in southern Sarawak also reported that he was assaulted by four schoolmates.
The alleged attack took place at a shopping mall after school hours.
Nancy urged victims and also their families to quickly report such incidents.
Early action is needed to stop bullying and to get the relevant authorities to act against the bullies, she added. – The Vibes, July 2, 2023
