KUALA LUMPUR – City police will take legal action against individuals riding electric scooters on the road starting January 1 next year.
Kuala Lumpur police Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department chief Zulkefly Yahya said there have been many complaints filed on the use of e-scooters.
“E-scooters are not allowed on the road. They are a nuisance to other road users, besides being dangerous, as they could cause accidents.
“These people (e-scooter users) can only ride in the gazetted areas, such as playgrounds and permitted spaces around shopping centres,” he told reporters here.
He said riders need to apply for a special licence from the Road Transport Department director-general if they wish to use e-scooters on the road.
“So far, police have identified three areas in the city where e-scooters are being actively used, namely around Dataran Merdeka, KLCC and Bukit Bintang,” he said, adding that presently, officers are only advising users to stop riding the vehicles on the road.
Zulkefly said beginning January 1, action can be taken against errant individuals under the Road Transport Act 1987, and they also face fines.
E-scooters, categorised as “micro-mobility vehicles”, became popular in May. – Bernama, December 12, 2020
