BANTING – With less than 24 hours remaining before the state polls, the spotlight has intensified on five pivotal constituencies in Selangor, where the Indian vote is expected to be decisive.
These seats – Kuala Kubu Baharu, Bukit Melawati, Sg Pelek, Dengkil and Dusun Tua – have become the epicentre of a fierce political struggle, with the fate of the state and potentially even the nation hanging in the balance.
In a bid to seize control of these highly contested constituencies, the Pakatan Harapan-Barisan Nasional alliance has launched an all-out effort to secure the support of the Indian community, recognising their power to sway the outcome.
According to V. Papparaidu, the PH candidate for Banting, many strong names have converged on these constituencies to drum up support from the locals, especially the Indians.
“With Chinese votes seemingly secured and Malay votes hanging in the balance, focus is now on the Indian vote for the unity government.”
He said leaders and supporters were now going on the ground to explain as much as possible to voters on why voting in this election was crucial.
This comes amidst the backdrop of a concerted campaign to discourage voters from coming out to vote. The campaign is targeted mainly towards Indians, with the message that nothing will change even if you vote and that all politicians have taken the community for a ride.
Though it is believed that some of those propagating this are actually cyber troopers paid by political parties, the campaign has not managed to gain much traction.
Papparaidu said PN would stand to gain the most while PH-BN would lose out if Indians stayed away from ballot boxes tomorrow.
“Our future is at stake here. We cannot let ourselves be fooled. At least with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, we can see a brighter future for all.
“We have waited for 60 years and many leaders have come and gone. So why can’t we give him four more years to see what he can do for the community,” he said when met in Banting.
On his electoral chances in Banting, he said it looked bright as the voters here were very receptive to the ruling coalition. However, he admitted it may not be as smooth in the two neighbouring constituencies in the Kuala Langat parliamentary constituency – Morib and Sijangkang.
Both these seats are considered Perikatan Nasional strongholds and it may be an uphill task to win them.
As polls approach, the political arena in various constituencies is now charged with anticipation. The culmination of efforts and strategies by the PH-BN coalition underscores the critical importance of these constituencies.
Anwar is slated to speak at a mega ceramah in Sg Kandis tonight, and many heavyweights will also be making their appearance there.
Sg Kandis, made up of about 17% Indian voters and almost 68% Malay voters, is being closely watched by many.
The seat was eyed by BN’s Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz but talks faltered and it is now being contested by PKR’s incumbent Zawawi Ahmad Mughni.
PN had made great strides there and PH may find it difficult to retain the seat. As such the Indian and Chinese votes there may tilt the balance in a close fight.
