PETALING JAYA – Nooryana Najwa Najib wants the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) to drop the charges against her father, former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and former Treasury secretary-general Tan Sri Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah.

Nooryana was referring to the six criminal breach of trust charges involving RM6.6 billion related to payments to the International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC).

Both Najib and Irwan pleaded not guilty to the charges, which were framed under Section 409 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code.

In an Instagram post, Nooryana claimed the case did not meet the minimum standard for prosecution, citing a leaked internal memo from the AGC.

The leaked memo of 12 pages, according to her, detailed why AGC had no case and that Najib and Irwan had done nothing wrong in the IPIC resolution.

“What was leaked in the memo was shocking,” she remarked.

“As early as 2019, the prosecution, led by (Tan Sri) Tommy Thomas, the AG at the time, clearly knew that the charges against my father and Tan Sri Irwan for the 1MDB-IPIC involving RM6.6 billion had no basis.

“AGC’s prosecution team themselves concluded that the six charges against my father were 'non-starters' and did not meet the minimum standard to be taken to court.

“The internal memo also revealed that AGC had interviewed 138 witnesses, and not one of them sided with the prosecution.

“AGC should take appropriate action and drop the charges immediately.”

Nooryana said since her father was charged in 2018, the case has not been heard in court.

“The prosecution has asked for many postponements with regard to this case,” she said, adding that since Najib was charged, he had sent two representation letters asking for the charges to be dropped, which was rejected in 2021.

She deemed the matter as an injustice to her father and claimed that Thomas’ answer that he could not recall the memo was an insult to the justice system. – The Vibes, August 18, 2023
