PETALING JAYA – Malaysian social media is having its own “it’s a bird, it’s a plane” debate concerning a vape and a pen.

It all started when a photo of Tanah Merah MP Ikmal Hisham Abd Aziz seemingly vaping in Parliament went viral.

He had, however, denied that he was holding a vape, saying that it was just a pen and that he is not a smoker.

Local chain store Mydin Malaysia, known for having a nose for current affairs and being cheeky about such matters on its social media pages, shared a photo of pens available at their stores.

It was captioned: “For pen aficionados, the pens at Mydin are not for smoking.”

The cheeky post has garnered over 300,000 views and over 2,400 retweets at the time of writing.

Many welcomed the joke, with some responding with “tarik balik” (“retract that statement”).

The phrase went viral after Putrajaya MP Radzi Jidin had asked Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to take back his statement in Parliament.

Anwar had alluded that Radzi was used to “corrupt practices” taking place during the Perikatan Nasional administration previously.

Meanwhile, in the latest development on the vape issue, Ikmal said he would take legal action against photographer Sadiq Asyraf, who captured the photo and for accusing him of vaping.

He also said a police report would be lodged by his officers at the Dang Wangi police headquarters this evening. – The Vibes, September 22, 2023
