PETALING JAYA – Steven Sim won many hearts after sending his former teacher and her husband to perform their pilgrimage in Mecca.

Dipping into his own pockets, the deputy finance minister said he had promised to sponsor “Cikgu Zaniyah” in appreciation of her services as his first school teacher in Year 1.

“I woke up before dawn and rushed to the airport to surprise my teacher. It took me eight months to organise things, and finally, the wait is over.

“My teacher did not know I was coming to the airport to send them off. 

“All the tiredness of waking up at 4am was gone when I saw the beautiful smiles on the faces of Teacher and Pak Johari,” he said on Facebook.

He also asked his teacher to pray for him when she is in the Holy Land.

“Please pray that I be given the strength to bear the heavy responsibilities of being a people's representative.

“Have a safe trip and may you be blessed with a good pilgrimage,” he added. – The Vibes, October 2, 2023
