SHAH ALAM – A sombre atmosphere loomed over PAS’ 69th muktamar that took place here today as three of the party’s women leaders on their way home to Sg Petani in Kedah were killed when a four-wheel drive vehicle struck them while they were helping another accident victim.

In the 2.30pm mishap, Sg Petani Muslimat (women’s wing) leaders Fatihah Nabila Bukri, 23, Taibah Sulaiman, 61, and Nurul Najihah Amzi, 27, were on their way back home after attending the wing’s gathering yesterday when they spotted an accident.

It happened at KM390 along the northbound lane of the North-South Expressway (Plus) near Behrang.

The trio had alighted from their vehicle to assist the driver of a four-wheel drive that had skidded into a monsoon drain.

The driver of a Toyota Altis car coming from behind reportedly did not notice the three female victims standing on the expressway shoulder and had ploughed into them.

The impact caused all three to be flung into the same drain, from which they were earlier attempting to extricate the driver of the other vehicle.

Fatihah and Taibah died on the spot, while Najihah succumbed to injuries at the Slim River District Hospital while receiving emergency treatment.

Muallim district police chief Supt Mohd Hasni Mohd Nasir reportedly said that the driver of the Toyota Altis has been remanded for 24 hours at the Muallim police headquarters to facilitate investigations under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 which deals with the allegation of "causing death by reckless or dangerous driving."

The muktamar’s permanent chairman, Hussin Ismail, revealed the tragic account to the delegation attending the main assembly at the IDCC Ideal Convention Centre here, which was officially opened by party president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang this morning.

Taibah was the Sg Petani PAS Muslimat (women’s) wing head while Fatihah was her deputy.

Najihah was the assistant secretary I of the wing, said Hussin.

He expressed his sorrow and extended his condolences to the families of the victims.

The gathering continues tomorrow, with debates and speeches from delegates from the various wings and state leadership. – The Vibes, October 20, 2023
