PRIME Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said police should empower personnel’s capability in mastering the country’s laws, apart from equipping the force with sophisticated assets, gadgets and arms, in an effort to move forward and face modern challenges and threats, which are getting increasingly demanding.
He is reported to have said this in conjunction with the 214th Police Day at the Police Training Centre parade grounds. Also present were Home Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin and Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador.
I agree with the prime minister that there is a need for police to master the nation’s laws to face modern challenges, but shouldn’t the government also take a tough stand on law enforcement and deal with the complaints made by the IGP if it really wants to inspire others to respect and abide by the rule of law?
Where is that firm statement by the prime minister in support of the IGP calling for swift action against the supposed “cartel” and corrupt practices within police, to restore integrity and public confidence in the force?
These are matters that again indicate the importance of Parliament and its role in providing checks and balances, which demand the government’s accountability when dealing with such matters.
The response by the Perikatan Nasional government to the IGP’s allegations of a cartel and corruption in the force has thus far been weak and inadequate.
The prime minister must speak up and assure us that reports will be lodged, a thorough probe conducted, and appropriate action taken against those found to have committed any offence. – The Vibes, March 27, 2021
