KUALA LUMPUR – National doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky has shed some light on the possibility of pairing men’s doubles player Goh Sze Fei with mixed doubles player Choong Hon Jian.
Rexy explained today based on the observations made by the coaching staff, Sze Fei and Hon Jian appeared to be compatible on the court.
However, before any definite decision is made, Rexy noted that he will have further discussions with mixed doubles coach Nova Widianto.
Hon Jian, who is currently paired with Yap Ling in the mixed doubles event, also had experience in the men’s doubles when he was partnered with Tee Kai Wun and Cheng Tan Jie.
“I have discussed this with (men’s doubles coaches) Tan Bin Shen and Hoon Thien How and they have agreed with the decision. After this, I will follow up with Nova if he agrees to my suggestion,” Rexy said.
“Based on Hon Jian’s age, I think it will be a good exposure for him if he is paired with Sze Fei. For now, they seemed about 80% to 90% compatible.
“When we paired them together to play against Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun recently, they had very good chemistry on the court.
“Also, I think his playing style suits Sze Fei’s, who is a playmaker.”
Rexy added he will announce the final decision latest Tuesday.
As for Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, the Indonesian said several names have been included in the list but he is unable to divulge more information for the time being.
“We must make a careful decision about this because if it is not done well, it might affect the performance of the players,” he added.
Rexy confirmed Sze Fei and Izzuddin’s decision to split up last week following a run of dismal results. – The Vibes, February 3, 2023.
