KUALA LUMPUR – National experienced archer Mohd Juwaidi Mazuki succeeded in renewing his national record in the men’s individual compound at the 2023 Archery World Cup Stage 1 in Antalya, Turkiye, yesterday.
According to World Archery, the winner of two gold medals at the 31st SEA Games in Hanoi, Vietnam last year collected 714 points after 72 arrows, thus erasing the old record of 709 points created at the qualifying round of the 2019 Asian Archery championship.
The 32-year-old athlete, who is ranked 161, will face Taiwan’s Yang Chen-Jui in the first round.
At the same time, the country’s elite female archer Fatin Nurfatehah Mat Salleh finished the qualifying round in 14th position after collecting a total of 701 points and will face off with Viktoriya Lyan of Kazakhstan in the first round.
In the meantime, Juwaidi and Fatin, who paired up in the mixed team compound event collected a total of 1,415 points to end the qualifying round in sixth best position and are awaiting the winners from the encounter between Estonia and Poland in the second round after being given a bye in the first round.
Meanwhile, the young archer, Syaqiera Mashayikh who made an appearance at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, collected 597 points to finish the women’s individual recurve qualification competition in 27th place.
Malaysia also has representatives in several events as the men’s and women’s team recurve, mixed team recurve and men’s compound team successfully advanced to the quarterfinals.
Archery World Cup Stage 1 in Antalya takes place from April 18 to 23.
After that, the Stage 2 competition is scheduled to take place in Shanghai, China from May 16 to 21 followed by Stage 3 in Medellin, Colombia from June 13 to 18, and Stage 4 in Paris, France from August 15 to 20, before the final round is expected to be held in Hermosillo, Mexico in September. – Bernama, April 20, 2023
