CLOSE to half of Singapore’s eligible voters had cast their ballots by 12 pm on Saturday in the city-state’s general election, according to the Elections Department (ELD).

A total of 1,261,449 Singaporeans – about 48 per cent of the 2,627,026 registered voters in contested constituencies – had voted at the country’s 1,240 polling stations by midday, the ELD said in a social media update.

Voters are selecting Members of Parliament from 11 political parties and two independent candidates contesting 92 seats across 32 constituencies. The ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) secured five seats uncontested in the Marine Parade–Braddell Heights Group Representation Constituency (GRC) on nomination day.

Polling stations will remain open until 8 pm local time. Voting is mandatory for all eligible Singaporean citizens.

In addition to domestic polling, overseas polling is taking place at 10 stations located in major cities including London, New York, San Francisco, Canberra, and Tokyo. These stations are operating from 8 am to 8 pm local time but must close no later than the official closing time in Singapore.

Meanwhile, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) reported severe congestion at the Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints, with travel delays of up to five hours. “Travellers are advised to check traffic conditions before embarking on their journey,” ICA said on Facebook. - May 3, 2025
