A TOTAL of 12 individuals have been taken into custody following a raid by the Phnom Penh Municipal Gendarmerie on a pornography operation based in the capital.

The suspects, including six Chinese nationals, five Cambodians and one Malaysian, were allegedly involved in the production, distribution and live-streaming of pornographic content.

The Phnom Penh Post reported today that Commander of the Municipal Gendarmerie, Rath Sreang, confirmed that the raid was carried out on Wednesday, 4 June, at a flat on Street 242, located in Boeung Prolit commune of Prampi Makara district.

“The operation was conducted in coordination with Deputy Prosecutor Seng Mengsrun of the Phnom Penh Municipal Court,” said Sreang, who ordered the bust.

Items confiscated at the scene included computers, condoms and a variety of sex toys, though authorities have not disclosed how long the group had been active.

The 12 suspects were formally referred to court on 6 June.

Under Cambodia’s Law on the Suppression of Human Trafficking and Sexual Exploitation, any individual found possessing, distributing, selling, renting, displaying or screening pornographic material faces a prison sentence ranging from seven days to one month, and a fine between 100,000 and 200,000 riel (approximately US$25 to US$50).

The production of such material is a more serious offence, carrying a penalty of one month to one year of imprisonment, and a fine of up to 2,000,000 riel (approximately US$500). Should minors be involved, the sentence can extend up to ten years. - June 7, 2025
