KUALA LUMPUR – A United States doctor said he developed a severe allergic reaction after receiving Moderna’s Covid-19 vaccine on Thursday, reported The New York Times.

Dr Hossein Sadrzadeh, who has an allergy to shellfish, told the newspaper that the reaction was almost immediate.

The geriatric oncology fellow at Boston Medical Centre (BMC) was quoted as saying he felt dizzy and had a racing heartbeat.

He said his heart rate went up to 150 beats per minute, his tongue prickled and went numb, and he was drenched in a cold sweat.

“It was the same anaphylactic reaction that I experienced with shellfish.”

He administered his EpiPen and was taken on a stretcher to the emergency room, where he was given medication, such as steroids and Benadryl.

His report is said to be the first severe reaction publicly linked to the Moderna jab, which is in the first week of its emergency roll-out in the US.

BMC spokesman David Kibbe in a statement said Dr Sadrzadeh “felt he was developing an allergic reaction and was allowed to self-administer his personal EpiPen. He was taken to the Emergency Department, evaluated, treated, observed and discharged. He is doing well today”.

It was reported that a US Food and Drug Administration official last week said the agency is investigating five allergic reactions that occurred after people were administered the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine. – The Vibes, December 26, 2020
