NORTH Korea has announced the successful test of a new "cutting-edge weapons system" involving hypersonic projectiles, marking a significant advancement in its strategic defence capabilities.

Two hypersonic projectiles were launched from near Pyongyang, striking a target in the northeast of the country, according to the state news agency KCNA.

The test forms part of North Korea’s efforts to enhance its deterrence against perceived enemies.

KCNA did not report whether Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un was present during the test.

The country has been developing hypersonic missiles designed to manoeuvre and evade missile defence systems.

South Korea’s military responded by stating that multiple short-range ballistic missiles were fired, coming just a week ahead of an important Asia-Pacific leaders’ summit in South Korea, which is set to be attended by US President Donald Trump. Trump is also expected to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping during his visit.

U.S. Forces Korea issued a statement expressing their awareness of North Korea’s missile launches, condemning the actions as "unlawful and destabilising" and calling on Pyongyang to desist from further violations of international sanctions. - October 23, 2025
