JAKARTA – The number of people missing in landslides that struck Indonesia’s West Java province over the weekend has risen to 27, with the death toll remaining at 13, said a senior disaster official today.

Heavy rains have been blamed for the natural disaster in the village of Cihanjuan in Sumedang district on Saturday, said Budi Budiman, head of the emergency unit of the Provincial Disaster Management Agency.

“We have received reports that more people are missing after the landslides,” he told the Xinhua news agency via phone.

As many as 18 people suffered injuries, he said, and the landslides destroyed 18 houses.

The search-and-rescue operation resumed today. – Bernama, January 11, 2021
