JAKARTA – Mt Semeru in East Java, the tallest volcano on the island in Indonesia, erupted today with a 4.5km-tall smoke cloud.

The 3,676m volcano erupted at 5.24pm East Indonesian time.

According to Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency, the volcano is now at volcanic alert level two, with Indonesia’s Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation monitoring and evaluating the situation.

Residents around Desa Sumber Mujur, Desa Curah Koboan, and the surrounding areas have been ordered to stay alert and keep away from the volcano’s environs.

Based on data from the Volcanological Survey of Indonesia agency, there are more than 70 active volcanoes in Indonesia, with seven actively erupting at the moment.

Volcanoes that have been actively erupting for the past two years include Mt Anak Krakatoa in the Sunda Strait, Mt Merapi in Central Java, Mt Kelud in East Java, Mt Sinabung in North Sumatra, Mt Bromo in East Java, and Mt Soputan and Mt Lokon in North Sumatra. – Bernama, January 16, 2021
